Opis
Clayelin is playing with her golden walnut, which she shares with no one. She pushes everyone she meets away and so she has no friends. Other heroines try to convince her that they can play and create things together. But Clayelin crankily rejects them, snippily repeating the words: “I’m not interested!” She reiterates again and again that the walnut is hers and hers alone. The theme of friendship is explored in relation to ownership, possessiveness, and (not) sharing. The motif of the golden walnut comes from the Slovenian folk fairy tale The Golden Walnut Twig. It is one of the few folk fairy tales that speak about culture and music, while also shedding light on the theme of gift giving.
The picture book I’m Not Interested! further encourages children’s creativity, as its heroines are imaginary creatures made of clay and plasticine. Creating with clay, plasticine, or other modelling compounds or painting with a paintbrush is becoming more and more valuable in our digital times, when even the youngest among us increasingly use their fingers only to swipe and slide over the ubiquitous screens. Working with traditional materials not only stimulates children’s sense of fantasy and creativity, but also encourages them to use all their fingers, thus positively influencing the development of their fine motor skills.
